What is Cabane à Jeux?
Cabane à Jeux, in Wakefield, QC, is a place for local children and families to play and learn, meet each other, and swap resources. All families in the municipality of La Pêche are welcome to attend our events and playgroups and to join the Joujouthèque La Pêche Toy Library. Most of our volunteers can assist you in French or English. Our location
Church of the Good Shepherd, 693 Riverside Road, Wakefield, QC. When Cabane à Jeux was first looking for a home, we found a community partner in the Church of the Good Shepherd. They have a wonderful basement facility that is used by several important community groups, including the Boy Scouts, quilting groups and support groups.
The Church provided us a space to build our toy library, run our playgroups and events, and meetings. Without their support, we could not have developed these programs for the community at large.
Cabane à Jeux, while not affiliated with the Anglican Church, is an independent group partnering with the Church to fulfill a need for the La Pêche community at large, and very thankful to be in such a comfortable and central location.
What we offer
Joujouthèque La Pêche Toy Library
A volunteer-run not for profit group, we opened in November 2008 with the newly built Joujouthèque La Pêche Toy Library in the bright and spacious basement of the church, with over 200 toys and games donated by the community in our first toy drive.
The toy library component is modeled after Joujouthèque Chelsea Toy Library, whose team gave us tremendous support and mentorship during our start-up.
There is no lack of places to play for children in La Pêche if you step outside…but if you’re a stay-at-home caregiver you’re sometimes starving for the company of others and your children need a change of scenery too. Playgroups are a great way to introduce your child to groups and for you to meet other families with kids. Cabane à Jeux playgroups happen twice a week along with toy lending. This online grapevine is designed to help new families and first-time parents in the area find what they need, tap into local resources, and save driving to the cities for things like second-hand clothing and organized children’s activities.
Cabane à Jeux (or ‘Playhouse’) can also be a place for conversations about play, child development, how to support your kids’ learning, and many more concerns parents share. To that end we’d like to help creatively address those questions by inviting guest speakers and workshop facilitators from the community who have interesting perspectives and experiences to share. Our region is especially blessed by the presence of many talented artists, musicians, outdoor educators and entrepreneurs who can inspire us as parents to explore new hands-on activities with our children while exposing them to the richness of our community. Watch for our events on the 2nd Saturday of each month…
Trading Post - COMING SOON
Use this forum to pass on what your kids have outgrown and to find new things they need. Sports and recreational equipment that will be worn for a season could be moved from family to family. Maybe you just want to borrow a pair of snowshoes to try before buying them to see if your child likes it. Baby gear like strollers, slings, carriers, baby bottles, leftover diapers when your child suddenly moves on to underwear fulltime…these are all things that could easily find a home if we post them!
